Einstein had it right when he reflected that ‘time is an illusion’ so a combination of switching on Christmas lights and celebrating fireworks night at the same time seems, if one can say it, perfect timing. Soham once again leads the field in Cambridgeshire with its annual ‘Christmas House’ extravaganza and last night’s switch on was timed to coincide with a  fireworks display hours two and a quarter hours later at Soham Town Rangers Football Club.

It couldn’t have been a more spectacular occasion.

Soham, Ely
John and Helen Attesley turned the lights on at 5pm at their Julius Martin Lane home, once again providing a wondrous feast of festive fun that in coming weeks will be enjoyed by thousands as they add to the tens of thousands raised for charity over the last decade or so.

Working in conjunction with the organisers of the football club event, the firework display provided a memorable backdrop to the vivid colours of their illuminations.

Many made their way to both occasions last night on foot, easing traffic congestion in the area as the town came together to enjoy the Christmas lights and the fireworks.

“Such a lovely idea,” said one happy visitor. “Fireworks plus Christmas light switch on.”

For the football club it was the second time they had staged a fireworks display, again put together by Cambridge Fireworks.

Guests were able to enjoy a fairground and stalls, a best dressed guy competition and plenty of music.
