They took inspiration from a poppy installation at the Tower of London, and now townsfolk in Crowland – 10 miles north of Peterborough – are welcoming visitors from afar for their own spectacular display.
The display at Crowland Abbey is the culmination of months of hard work that began in January when the idea was first circulated.
Up to 100 people have since worked on creating the 6,000 poppies that feature in the Remembrance tribute.
Crowland Abbey is actually the parish church of Crowland and part of the Church of England in the Diocese of Lincoln.
The abbey is open for prayer and for visitors most days from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. except when a service is taking place, or a funeral is scheduled that day or when guides are not available.
