Arson arrest after fire destroys March, Cambridgeshire, bungalow

A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson following a bungalow fire in March, Cambridgeshire, last night. Neighbours were told to evacuate their home as firefighters spent three and a half hours tonight tackling the blaze that destroyed a bungalow in Hundred Road, March, Cambridgeshire.

One casualty was reported – a woman was taken to hospital after suffering minor injuries.

A 55-year-old man is in custody after being arrested on suspicion of arson endangering life.

“Our control was alerted just before 6pm this evening reporting a fire in a bungalow,” said a spokesperson for Cambridgeshire fire and rescue.

“Crews from March, Chatteris, Manea and Stanground, including our turntable aerial ladder, are at the scene working hard to tackle the fire and prevent it from spreading.”

People were urged to stay away from the area to enable firefighters to tackle the fire.

“There are also lots of emergency services at the scene, so it is very busy,” said the spokesperson.

“Those living in the area should keep their windows closed if they’re being impacted by the smoke.

By 9.30pm fire crews were able to leave the scene.

“We will be carrying out an investigation tomorrow to try and establish the cause of the fire,” said the spokesperson.

“Thank you to locals for your patience while we dealt with this incident.”

One resident said that bungalow was one of those “near to the roundabout before you get to Tesco”.

Pledges to help those affected are already being received by the March Free Discussion Facebook Group which has 44,000 members.

“Does anyone know who owns/lives in the property that’s on fire?” one resident wrote.

“Sounds bad and it’s likely they’ve lost everything and may need some help getting back on their feet.

“Would be nice if the community can get together to donate some odds and ends, food, clothes, etc?

“It will never replace what they’ve lost but can maybe help them out for the time being.”
