St Neots: Cambridgeshire town crossing its fingers as Great Ouse set to peak

Fingers will be crossed firmly in St Neots in the early hours of Saturday as the River Great Ouse reaches its peak.
Independent county councillor Stephen Ferguson said this afternoon: “I spoke to the Huntingdonshire District Council officer in charge of organising the flood response effort.

“The situation as of 3pm Friday is that the Environment Agency modelling is predicting that river will reach its peak level between 1am and 2am tonight (Saturday Morning).”

He added: “Since the river is close to its record measured height (Christmas 2020) that should be a cause for concern.
“Their models are currently predicting that the river will not breach, but there is some uncertainty in those models, and residents at risk of flooding should be prepared.

“If we can get through tonight then there is a dry spell predicted for the next few days that should see river levels return to more normal levels.”

A spokesperson for Huntingdonshire District Council said: “Flood defences in St Neots have been deployed as a flood warning is in place for River Great Ouse at Eaton Socon, Eynesbury, Eaton Ford, and St Neots.

“Take care on riverside roads and footpaths, and don’t put yourself in unnecessary danger.”
Flood warning area: School Lane and Wheatsheaf Road in Eaton Socon, Wren Walk, Hardwick Road and St Marys Street in Eynesbury, St Neots Road, Mill Hill Road and Cross Hall Road in Eaton Ford, High Street, Priory Road, New Street, Hawthorn Road, and Leys Road in St Neots.

“The water is slowly edging towards the entrance of the gym so we’re hoping it doesn’t rise anymore,” said a post to Facebook.
“It’s getting sealed up as a precaution. We’ve made sure other boats are secure and rescued one from the bottom of the rack and placed it safely in the boathouse.

“We hope that everyone stays safe and there isn’t too much damage to clubs that have been affected.”
Little Paxton Parish Council said the river levels at Little Paxton are expected to rise further today after last night’s heavy rainfall.

They also pointed out that Brook Street in St Neots is now closed due the flood waters.
“Does anyone know who owns this car? It’s about to be flooded,” said Cllr Stephen Ferguson, the independent councillors for St Neots East & Gransden.
