A Wisbech town councillor admitted tonight that contractors had let them down – for the second year running – by not removing Christmas decorations and Christmas trees from the market place.
Cllr Susan Wallwork, vice chair of the community events and festivals committee, said: “Just to make everyone aware the decorations were supposed to be removed by the second week in January at the latest, as agreed with the contractors during multiple meetings all through 2023.

“Unfortunately, the contractors only started yesterday as they reported to the clerk that due to the rain the road to the lockups, that house the lights/tree/decorations throughout the year, was not able to take the weight of the vans/made it unsafe.”
She said: “Everyone is correct that we had the same issue last year which is why we had monthly meetings with the contractors to try and prevent the same issues happening again and keep the lines of communication open.
“The town council and especially me who has been having the meetings and felt very confident that a water tight plan was in place, are frustrated however there’s little we can do, and we have to trust the contractors on this occasion that they were unable to complete the work as agreed for good reason.”
Cllr Wallwork added: “I know it’s not ideal having them up this late in January, but they have started to be removed now so fingers crossed the contractors continue this work at a speedy rate and I’m not back at Easter asking for Easter decorations to be made for the tree.”
