An inquest has opened into the death of well-known hockey club member Matthew Lakey, 30, who died whilst visiting Cambodia. His funeral took place on March 28 at Fenland Crematorium with friends and family gathering afterwards at The Ship Inn, March.
Following his death, March Town Hockey Club released a statement to their Facebook page to say that “it is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we share the devastating news of the passing of our beloved teammate, Matt Lakey.
“Matt was not just a player but an integral part of our hockey family. His passion for the sport, his unwavering dedication, and his infectious spirit enriched our community both on and off the field.
“We are deeply saddened by this loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with Matt’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.
“As we mourn together, let us also remember the joy and camaraderie that Matt brought to our club. His memory will forever remain etched in our hearts”.
The inquest opened at Huntingdon on Thursday with only the briefest details provided about the cause of death.
The coroner described how Matthew’s body was found by passers-by next to an inlet by the sea in Koh Rong: it is thought he may have been crossing the stream.
A post mortem took place last month after his body was repatriated and a full inquest will be held once the results are known.
Koh Rong is one of Cambodia’s most popular tourist destination and the country’s tourism officials say it is famous for its “serene beauty. Located near the coast of Sihanoukville, Cambodia, the island boasts pristine white sandy beaches, warm crystal-clear ocean waters, and a hot tropical climate”.
More than 500 people helped Matthew’s family with the cost of repatriating his body back to this country and to support them.
A GoFundMe appeal launched by a family friend has so far raised £13,500.
On the appeal page, Laura Haslegrave describes how she set it up on behalf of Lauren Lakey.
Laura wrote: “As I’m sure you are all aware, Matthew has heartbreakingly passed away whilst travelling abroad.
“I know Matthew’s family are blown away and incredibly grateful already for everyone’s kindness and support they have all received.
“We want to continue to give Pete, Amanda, Lauren and their family all the support we can during this devastating time.
“Raising funds to support funeral costs and Matthew’s safe return to the UK, is one thing which we feel can offer them some relief and comfort, in order to honour Matthew’s memory and to say our goodbyes.”
