For one brief moment today pub boss Jonathan Capper feared his beer would have to rise to £220 a pint to cover an unwelcome £1.1m bill from EDF Energy.

He even posted a photocopy of the bill – for £1,113,639.32 – he had received from EDF Energy.

The bill covered the 165 days from May 20 to October 31 – which works out at around £6,749 a day!

Mr Capper is managing director of Mereside Taverns Ltd which owns the traditional local, The Angel at Ramsey.

EDF Energy even gave him the date they expected to collect the money from his bank – on or immediately after November 17.

Along with a copy of the bill, Mr Capper told customers on the pub’s Facebook page: “From today beer will be £220 a pint and spirits £165 for 25ml.”

The energy company says the bill is based on “your latest meter readings” but first thing Monday, Mr Capper may be expected to challenge that.

And in the meantime, pub regulars have been enjoying a laugh at the energy’s expenses – with no increase in the price of their favourite tipple.
