Cambridgeshire County Council will begin work from 16 September to update the Swaffham Heath Road crossroads with the A1303 to provide safer journeys for all road users. The work is expected to take around three months.
This scheme is one of the many road improvement projects which are currently underway across the county. The council has pledged to spend an additional £43 million into Cambridgeshire’s highways over this year and next year, on top of normal spending.
This junction, where traffic from Swaffham Heath Road crosses the A1303, has previously been a cluster site for collisions and is known locally as an area of concern.
The works aim to improve safety by relocating the southern junction of Swaffham Heath Road, introducing a stagger to the crossroads, so that it is no longer possible to go straight across the A1303 without stopping.
As part of these works the whole junction will also be resurfaced and new road markings painted.
To enable the work to be carried out safely a number of temporary traffic management measures will be introduced, including:
- Closure of Swaffham Heath Road between the A1303 and the A1304 from 16 September until 29 November
- Closure of the Swaffham Heath junction overnight (from 9pm to 5am) from 4 November to 15 November
- Temporary traffic lights will be in place at the Swaffham Heath junction during the day from 28 October to 15 November
Cllr Neil Shailer, vice-chair of the Highways and Transport Committee at Cambridgeshire County Council, said: “We’re committed to delivering better, safer, and more sustainable journeys across our county for all road users.
“We’ve listened to local residents, and we’ve looked at the data, so I’m really pleased that work is starting to improve safety at this junction, which has been an area of concern.
“I’d like to thank residents for their patience while these works are completed.
“I am confident that we will soon start to see the benefit of these changes in terms of reduced accidents and injuries in this location.”
