A by-election will be held to elect two new district councillors for Longstanton ward after two district councillors stood down.

The resignations of Sarah Cheung-Johnson and Alex Malyon mean that a South Cambridgeshire District Council by-election will be held on Thursday 3 November 2022.

Cllr Cheung-Johnson said: “As many of you will know we both have young children and have also continued to work.

“I work for the university and Alex as a nurse in the NHS, alongside being district councillors.

“We have reluctantly come to the conclusion that we can no longer balance the considerable pressures and workload involved in being a councillor for this growing area with these and other family and work commitments.”

She added: “We will continue to assist the excellent work of the Liberal Democrats in our communities as well as to fight for a more open, more just country.”

Cllr Malyon said that representing the ward for the past five years had been “one of the greatest privileges I could have imagined”.

The Longstanton ward covers Longstanton, Northstowe and Oakington and Westwick.

Whoever is elected on 3 November will represent the ward until May 2026, when all the seats on South Cambridgeshire District Council will be up for election again.
