Peterborough MP Paul Bristow called for Boris Johnson to return to front line politics, claiming “no one in modern politics has the same ‘rock star appeal’”. In a column published in today’s Daily Express he recalls the day Boris supported him on a visit to Peterborough.
“He was mobbed as he was wandering around the Bretton Centre,” writes Mr Bristow.
Mr Bristow says when Boris joined him knocking on doors “Facebook groups came alive with reports of Boris on Werrington streets”.
“Starmer is so beatable. But to do this we need our best eleven on the field.
“This includes Boris. So come on No 10, pick up the phone.
“Let’s put the band back together. Boris and Rishi were a winning combination. They can be again.”
Mr Bristow also told Daily Express readers that he only won the Peterborough seat “because Boris Johnson was prime minister”.
In 2022, with no Boris to support, he backed Liz Truss “to be the next prime minister in this Conservative leadership election. As our prime minister, I believe that Liz Truss would deliver for us”.
After her brief stint as PM, Mr Bristow supported Boris when he entered a fresh leadership race but when the former prime minister withdrew, the Peterborough MP backed Rishi.
“I supported Boris Johnson to be our next PM. His star qualities and charisma is obvious to the public – beyond the world of Twitter,” he said.
In social media posts this week, Mr Bristow promised that “I will secure the cash for a new swimming pool and a new bus station” and would work with Peterborough United to find them a new stadium.
“Together we have already secured over £100 million for our city,” he said.
“These are my priorities moving forward.”
