A Cambridgeshire police officer has been charged with assault following a confrontation with a group of youths in Wisbech. PC Dean Thompson, 53, is appearing before St Albans magistrates today (Friday 14 February).
He was charged with assault by beating on February 6, following an incident in St Peter’s churchyard, Wisbech, in August last year (2024).
He is currently suspended from duty.

Thousands have seen a video of the alleged offence after it was filmed on a mobile phone and widely shared to social media.
PC Thompson was accompanied by a female officer as he is seen at first speaking to a group of youths near the fountain.

The video follows his movements which led to the alleged assault.
It captures the moment he confronts one youth seated on the top of the bench, and a later verbal exchange as PC Thompson moves away.
