73 suspected drink or drug drivers were arrested across Cambridgeshire during the Euro 2024 football tournament – four more than during the last tournament in 2021. Out of these, 53 people have already been charged.
Police revealed some examples of the arrests, with a reminder that the drink drive limit = 35 microgrammes):
One man was seen to open a bottle of wine and drive away on the A14 in Bottisham. We tracked him down and he blew 62 at the roadside
One woman was involved in a crash in Whittlesey and identified as the driver. She blew 132 at the roadside
A man was arrested after an evening crash in Ely on the day the Euros kicked off. He gave a reading of 170
Another man was seen drinking in a pub and then driving in Whittlesey. He later blew 56 microgrammes in custody
A driver was seen slumped at the wheel on the A605 at Peterborough. He blew 125 at the roadside
“Our confidential hotline, to report suspected drink/drug drivers anonymously, is available 24/7 all year round,” said a police spokesperson.
