A driver had to be rescued by firefighters after their car got stuck on Welney Wash road, on the Norfolk/Cambridgeshire border.
The Nissan driver had ignored road closed signs and tried to cross Welney Wash before becoming stranded and forced to call for assistance.

“Appliances from Outwell, Littleport and Kings Lynn rescued one person stuck in a vehicle in water at the Welney Wash,” said an incident report filed by Norfolk fire and rescue.

It was only the second such incident during recent days whilst the road remained closed because of flooding.
Local Facebook group Welney Flood Watch has been monitoring the road and the following morning, Thursday, reported that whilst the river level continued to fall – a further 16 cm in 24 hours – the height remained around 2.98m.

“That still equates to circa TWO FEET of water being on the road in the deepest parts,” Welney Flood Watch posted.

“Fingers crossed the levels continue to drop and we should be in a much better place by the end of the weekend.”

As at 7.30am today (Friday 11th October 2024) the group reported another steady drop (17cm) in the river level over the last 24 hours.

“Now down to 2.82m,” it said. “It’s getting better, but you can’t rush these things!”
