A 20-year-old from the Fens is hoping to become one of the youngest councillors in Cambridgeshire. Jack Wheelan has been announced as the Liberal Democrat candidate in May to represent Roman Bank and Peckover on Cambridgeshire County Council.
“I’m proud to have been involved in the Cambridgeshire public sector for many years, mainly working with charities and the councils to provide better education opportunities for our young people,” he said.
“There is no better time than now to throw my hat into the ring to give a fresh, energetic voice to the residents of Roman Bank and Peckover, and to young people across our county.”
“I look forward to getting onto the doorsteps to speak with residents, community groups and local organisations to hear directly from them on how we can make our area a much better place to live.”
Jack describes himself as a “local Fenland lad through and through” and is a former chair of the Fenland and East Cambridgeshire Youth Board.
He also says he has led initiatives in Wisbech and Fenland focused on food poverty, mental health, and making local democracy more accessible for young people.
“During COVID, I worked directly with the government’s Opportunity Area scheme, collaborating with politicians and organisations to improve educational standards across Fenland and East Cambridgeshire,” he added.
