Drivers in Cambridgeshire have seen a year-on-year increase in the number of parking fines issued to them by their local council, according to new data analysed by cinch, the UK’s biggest online retailer of used cars.
According to the figures obtained through a Freedom of Information (FOI) request, Cambridgeshire County Council issued 200 more parking fines in 2023 compared to 2022:
- In 2022, 40,840 penalty charge notices were issued by Cambridgeshire County Council.
- In comparison, in 2023 this number increased to 41,040 penalty charge notices
- The data obtained shows that between the start of 2024 and 19 August 2024, 30,390 notices have been issued this year.
- On average, 112 fines were issued per day in 2023.
- As of 19 August, 131 fines have been issued per day in 2024.
The surge in fines has also led to a significant increase in revenue for the council:
- Parking fines generated £1,192,924.67 for Cambridgeshire County Council in 2022.
- In 2023, this figure increased to £1,194,743.03.
- £770,600.00 has been generated in 2024 so far (as of 19 August 2024).
Chesterton Road emerged as the Cambridgeshire location with the highest number of fines in 2023, with 2,031 reported. In the previous year, Jesus Lane held the top spot, with 1,859 fines issued.
Between January 2024 and August 2024, Chesterton Road is the most fined location, with 1,462 reported.
Sam Sheehan, motoring editor at cinch, commented on the findings: “These figures should be a reminder for all drivers to carefully check any nearby signs before parking – especially in busy areas or places they aren’t familiar with. Nobody wants to find a parking fine come through their letterbox.
“Also, if you think the fine is unfair or it’s incorrect, don’t forget you have 28 days to appeal to an independent tribunal. And, if it is correct, you might be able to reduce the fine by paying sooner rather than later.”
