Two people were taken to hospital after fire broke out at The Rising Sun public house at Leverington near Wisbech in the early hours of today. Both were taken to hospital as a precautionary measure, said Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue, having suffered smoke inhalation.
Six fire engines and an aerial appliance were sent to the fire at 1.38am, said a fire service spokesperson.
“The fire had started on the first floor and spread to the roof. Firefighters tackled the fire using four hose reels and an aerial appliance and the fire was out by 4.45am.
“Two people were taken to hospital for a precautionary check having suffered smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire was accidental. Crews had all left the scene by 5.25am.”
The spokesperson added: “Water pressure in Leverington is likely to be low this morning as crews discovered a damaged water main. Anglian Water are on the scene repairing it.”
Pub owners, Elgoods, posted a statement to say that “we are devastated by the news that one of our beloved pubs, The Rising Sun, Leverington, has been damaged by a fire overnight.
“Thankfully, residents were safely evacuated with no serious injuries, but the extent of the damage to the building has yet to be assessed.
“We are extremely grateful for the quick and thorough actions of the fire service and the support of the local police.”
